From Blank Page to “The End.”
A step-by-step course for writing your novel, from the first spark of an idea to the last line of your final chapter
Let’s be honest. Most of us have a folder somewhere full of brilliant ideas and chapters that never grew up into books.
(We’re authors, and we have that folder too.)
The problem usually isn’t talent. It’s that nobody hands you a map for the long middle stretch between “I have an idea” and “I typed The End.” This course is that map.
From Blank Page to “The End.” walks you through writing a new novel in four stages and 13 craft modules, one month at a time, so you always know what to work on next.
This course is for you if…
- You have an idea (or six) and want to turn one into a full manuscript
- You’ve started novels before and lost steam somewhere around chapter eight
- You want craft you can actually use on the page, not rules you have to obey
- You’d like a steady pace instead of trying to learn everything at once
Already have a draft in progress? Our recorded craft workshops are built for writers at any stage.
One stage a month, at a pace you can keep
The course opens in four stages, one each month, so you can learn a stage, write with it, and be ready for the next.
Buy the whole course, a single stage, or just the module you need most. Every module you buy is yours for three years from the date you enroll.
What you’ll learn
Stage 1: Foundation
Start here · Opens January 1The First Draft Permission Slip
Perfectionism, internal editors, and the only real goal of a first draft: finish it. Plus the practical setup: building a writing habit that fits your actual life (word-count goals, a realistic schedule, tracking your progress), and plotting vs. pantsing vs. somewhere in between. Whichever kind of writer you are, you’ll see how the modules that follow fit around your process, so you can work through them before you draft or alongside it.
The Idea: Finding & Developing Your Idea
Premise vs. concept, the “what if” question, identifying the emotional core of your story, and knowing if an idea has legs for a full manuscript. Plus choosing your genre with eyes open: what romance, mystery, fantasy, science fiction, and YA readers expect, typical word counts for each, and how to use tropes as tools rather than crutches.
Who Are These People? Character Development
Building protagonists and antagonists with agency, want vs. need, character contradictions, backstory vs. what makes it onto the page, and ensuring secondary characters earn their place.
The Architecture: Story Structure
Not prescriptive (no “you must use the Hero’s Journey”), but an honest look at how stories create momentum: turning points, escalation, and why structure serves the reader. Includes the beats your genre’s readers count on, like the happily ever after (or happy for now) in romance and the fair-play solution in a mystery, and how to deliver them without feeling formulaic.
Stage 2: The Craft
Opens February 1World on the Page: Setting & Atmosphere
Grounding readers without info-dumping, sensory specificity, how place shapes character and plot, and setting as mood.
Scene by Scene: Building the Unit of Story
Every scene needs to do multiple jobs. Goal, conflict, outcome, and the crucial question: does this scene need to exist? Plus handling backstory and exposition: when to reveal the past, drip-feeding information through scenes instead of front-loading it, and making flashbacks earn their place.
The Voice: Point of View, Narrative Distance & Prose
Choosing and committing to a POV, close vs. distant narration, head-hopping pitfalls, and how voice distinguishes your story from every other story with the same premise. Then down to the sentence: show vs. tell (and when telling is the right call), filter words, specific detail over generic, and the rhythm of your prose.
Dialogue That Works
Subtext, how people don’t say what they mean, dialogue as character revelation, the balance between dialogue and action beats, and the punctuation and formatting basics.
Tension & Pacing
The difference between external and internal tension, controlling reader speed through sentence and scene length, micro-tension on every page, and laying the groundwork for a middle that doesn’t sag (which gets its own module next).
Stage 3: The Harder Stuff
Opens March 1The Middle (a module just for the middle)
This deserves its own space. Sustaining momentum, complications that grow organically, and using subplots and secondary storylines to add depth and keep the story moving. Plus how to keep yourself from abandoning the manuscript at 40%.
Theme: What Is This Story Really About?
Theme as something discovered rather than imposed, how it surfaces through character choice, and avoiding the “message” feeling that distances readers.
The Beginning & The End
First pages that earn trust, the promise you make to the reader in chapter one, and how to pay it off in an ending that feels both surprising and inevitable. These two come late on purpose: openings are often easiest to tune once you know where the story lands.
Stage 4: Completion
Opens April 1Revision: Reading What You Actually Wrote
The difference between revision and editing, doing a structural pass before a line pass, how to see your own manuscript clearly, and when it’s done enough. Then what comes after “The End”: working with beta readers and critique partners, when to bring in a professional editor, and an overview of your publishing paths, from querying agents to indie publishing. You won’t be doing it alone: Gemini Writer’s Studio offers a writing community where you can find beta readers and critique partners, one-on-one coaching to help you plan your next steps, and professional editing services when your manuscript is ready for a fresh set of expert eyes.

Deciding to invest in my novel by jumping in and enrolling in the course was truly one of the best things I did for myself and my writing career. I felt the lesson modules were perfectly done to lead me forward. I truly found my community with Eva and Julie. The course was perfect for me to continue on my own, which I am doing now.
